Why Choose In-Home Petting Over Boarding?

October 22, 2015 Posted in: Pet Sitting

Cut23e_dog When it comes to caring for your pets while you are out of town, at work, or any other engagement you may have, there are two primary options – in-home pet sitting or boarding.

While there are many great boarding facilities staffed by knowledgeable professionals, there are issues with boarding that can make in-home pet sitting the better option.

1. Less stress on your pet

Being left in an unfamiliar place, in a kennel, with a different schedule than your animal is used to can be extremely stressful. Many people report that after long kennel stays, some animals will act different for days or weeks until they adapt to their home schedule again. This is the result of stress. By having a pet sitter come to your home your pet can stay on the same schedule they are used to in surroundings they are familiar with. Most pets will develop positive relationships with their pet sitters and look forward to visits.

2. Less exposure to parasites and disease

While most boarding facilities take care to make sure their facilities are clean and that animals are up to date on vaccinations, sometimes exposure to parasites and disease can still occur. It’s just the nature of having many animals in a small place. By using an in-home pet sitter, you minimize the exposure to these harmful factors.

3. Your home is looked after

When you hire an in-home pet sitter you are also getting a de facto house sitter too. Pet sitters can keep an eye on your home while you are away and let you know about issues such as storm damage, fires, or break-ins far more quickly than waiting to learn about these things until you arrive home. Turning lights on/off, watering plants, and bringing in your mail are some of the extra services some pet sitters provide.

4. Cost

With all of the benefits of in-home pet sitting you might think that it’s far more expensive than boarding, but that’s just not the case. For most pet owners, in-home pet sitting is usually equal to or less than the cost of of boarding. This is especially true for owners with multiple animals or large animals as most boarders charge per animal and based on the animals weight/size.
